A restored shophouse guesthouse on Lebuh Chulia with 18 rooms around a central airwell, inside the George Town heritage zone. The building is a century old: floors creak, ceilings are high, and there is no lift to the first floor.

Breakfast is toast, kaya and local coffee in the courtyard. Everything in the old town is within a fifteen-minute walk, which is the point of staying here rather than at the ferry terminal.

    “The courtyard at breakfast is worth the whole stay. Do take the ground-floor room if stairs are a problem — they are steep.”
